Energy Efficiency for Low Income


Free Weatherization and Energy Efficiency Programs
If you are a low income homeowner or renter, you may qualify for free weatherization of your home or other assistance to improve your home’s energy efficiency.  Click Here to see the services that are available through these programs.

Assistance in Paying your Heating and Electric Bills
The New Mexico Human Services Department with its Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides help to low-income New Mexican households, including disabled individuals and senior citizens living on fixed incomes with help on heating and cooling costs during the year.

Weatherization Program

The Weatherization Assistance Program is a federal grant program administered by the U.S. Department of Energy, and managed in New Mexico by the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority through partnerships with The State of New Mexico, community based non-profit organizations, and public utilities. 
After completing an Energy Audit and a Blower Door test the Weatherization Assistance program will provide income-qualified customers with free installation of energy saving products that help to improve the energy efficiency of their homes and lower their utility bills. Weatherization crews may apply or install the following energy saving measures;

Air Leakage Reduction
Measures:
  • Silicone caulking
  • Gaskets
  • Glass
  • Doors
  • Windows
  • Weather stripping
  • Door bottoms and sweeps
  • Foam Tape
  • Thresholds
  • New Door w/complete frame
  • A/C covers
  • Air Duct repair
Insulation:
  • Batt and Blow insulation
  • Water heater blankets/ pipe insulation
  • B-Board (repairs around home)
Lighting:
  • Replace all incandescent bulbs w/CFL’s (as long as the fixture holds it)
Refrigerators:
  • Replace inefficient refrigerators w/ Energy Star refrigerators
Storm Doors:
  • Replace with Combo type door units only
Heating and Cooling Modifications:
  • Replace with Energy Star heaters and air conditioners
  • Will bring wood stoves up to code if primary source of heat in home
Storm Windows:
  • Replace Interior storm windows only
Health and Safety:
  • Repair gas leaks
  • Repair water heaters
  • Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Replace furnace filters
Incidental Repairs to:
  • Sheetrock, glazing, stucco, metal lath, window operators, entry locks, spray can foam, flashing for blocking and belly patch for mobile homes
